All exhibitors must be members of the AOBA Youth Association (AYA) to compete in AYA events.
Exhibitors must be 21 years of age or younger as of Jan. 1, 2009.
Age divisions are College 19-21, Senior 15-19, Intermediate 12-14, Junior 9-11, and Cria 8 & under.
Entries are limited to 1 alpaca per class per exhibitor with 5 alpacas total per show.
No pre judged competitions entries accepted at the show.
Watch Alpacas Magazine, the AOBA Web site and The AYA newsletter for show entry deadlines and any changes that may occur.
Entry fee under development.
All participants who do not show an alpaca at AYA events will need to pay a participation fee of $10 at all AYA shows. This fee is the same regardless of the number of contests at each event that the youth participates in.
All fees are non-refundable.
Exhibitors must wear their exhibitor numbers given to them at registration during the halter show and showmanship contest, performance show, and speech.
AOBA is not liable for accidents.
If exhibitor is not present to show the alpaca in its halter class, the alpaca cannot be exhibited unless previously approved by the AOBA Director of Youth Activities.
COLLEGE DIVISION - This Division will be more in line with the judging of the essay, photo, display, and art/photo.
Health Requirements
Due to specific state health rules, contact the Web site or call AOBA to receive a paper copy of ALL health requirements for each AYA show. These health requirements must be followed or the animal will not be allowed on the grounds. All animals must have a CVI, BVDV, microchip and meet with all state health requirements.

The display competition is designed to be a creative competition for all youth. The goal is to have the youth use their creativity to inform the public of something related to the alpaca industry using only a display board. Each child will be judged on
Ages
Cria Class – 8 and under
Junior Class – 9 – 11 years old
Intermediate Class – 12 – 14 years old
Senior Class – 15 – 19 years old
The age of the child as of January 1 of the show year.
Size of Display
All displays must be free standing display boards and must not require any electricity.
Cria – No larger than 3 feet wide by 3 feet tall by 2 feet deep display
Junior – No larger than 3 feet wide by 3 feet tall by 2 feet deep display
Intermediate – No larger than 4 feet wide by 4 feet tall by 2 feet deep display
Senior – No larger than 5 feet wide by 6 feet tall by 3 feet deep display
Judging
Each display will be judged on a scoring sheet. Points will be awarded for all criteria that is met on the scoring sheet. There will be 3 judges and the scores will be totaled to determine the color ribbon given.
Awards
Crias will only receive Participation Ribbons but will be judged with only positive comments encouraging the youth.
All Junior – Senior participants will receive a ribbon of color depending on the total points on the scoring sheet. Blue 255- 300 points (85%-100%), Red 225 – 254 points (75%-84%) and White 224 (Under 74%) and under.
Scoring
Points will be awarded for each category: Informational, Creativity, Eye Appeal, and Educational Value. Each category is work 25 points each with total a judge can award being 100. Other awards given will be Most Creative, Most Informational/Educational, People’s Choice and Judge’s Choice (highest total score).

This arts presentation is designed to educate youth about alpacas while enhancing their creativity in preparation for becoming the next generation of alpaca breeders and ranchers.
In addition, we are offering each participant an opportunity to enter their creation of the official logo for the Alpaca Youth Association or AYA!
Categories: Logo Contest:The participant may use any medium to create the official AYA logo. Photography (Black/White, Color and/or Computer Aided) Drawing/Painting (Pencil, Charcoal, Oil or Water Color) Medium of Choice
Judging Logo Contest: Majority vote of the AOBA members There will be 3 judges for the following categories with an expert in each category. All 3 judges will score all three categories. Photography: Best Action Shot, Head Shot, Funniest Shot and/or Cria Shot Drawing/Painting: Most accurate depiction of an alpaca Medium of Choice: Most Creative

Each category is worth 25 points. Each judges awards 100 points.

Ages 8 & Under – Cria Division (Usually Kindergarten to Grade 2 – Ages 5, 6, 7, 8 years)
Shorter Speeches – One to three minutes depending on topic

Speeches should be designed to be easy, FUN, and just get kids used to being in front of people.
Encourage the use of visual aids – like posters, photos, etc
These are great memory aids for kids who get nervous
Could possible split this group into Grades 9-10 and 11-12
Length of speech should be a minimum of 10 minutes
Speech again is more developed and uses complex topics
Speech MUST be memorized
Kids can refer to note cards, but they will lose points for this
Must use professional visual aids

ESSAY
1. Contest is open to active AYA members only. Essays may only be submitted once.
Requirements (failure to meet any one requirement disqualifies the essay) - Topic and Complexity by age group.
Cria (8 and under);
Junior (9 through 11);
Intermediate (12 through 14)
Senior (15 through 19)
Cria: 75-100 words. Child or parent can write for them. Can have pictures & drawings.
Junior: 250-300 words. May be handwritten or typed. A picture or two if desired.
Intermediate: 400-500 words. Typed, Manuscript format, 12.5 font size .
Senior: 750-1000 words. Typed, Manuscript format, 12.5 font size.
Preparation for Judging: Typewritten or computer-generated, double-spaced, 12-pt. Times or similar type style, on one side of white paper following standard manuscript format.
Write on the designated subject only.
CRIAS: make up their FUTURE farm name, what kinds of animals, pictures, how it will work.
All factual statements must be referenced with bibliographical-style endnotes.
A brief biographical sketch of the essayist, including date of birth, gender, complete mailing address, and telephone number, must accompany the essay.
The word count does not include the endnotes, the bibliography or references, nor the essayist's biographical sketch – which should be on a separate page. List 4-H or other affiliations, Farm Name if applicable.
3. Essays will be judged on (a) scope of research - 40%; (b) accuracy - 30% (eliminate for crias); (c) creativity - 10%; (d) conciseness - 10%; and (e) logical development of the topic - 10%. (High school) Crias -- creativity is 40%, research 10%
4. Essayists should forward essays directly to the AOBA Youth Association office. Each 4-H Office is responsible for selecting the state's winner and should set its deadline so state judging can be completed at the state level in time for the winning state essay to be mailed to the AOBA office before March 1, 2009. No essay received after March 1 will be considered.
5. Final judging and selection of the Winners will be made by the AOBA’s Essay Committee, whose decision is final.
6. The National Winners will be announced at the AOBA National Conference.
7. All National entries become the property of AYA and may be published or used as it sees fit. No essay will be returned.
